disc slang and terms


Stability - This term refers to the results of a discs flight. If a disc is stable it will fly straight. Under stable is a disc that turns right. Over stable is a disc that turns left.

Anhyzer - An anhyzer throw is when you tilt your disc so that the left side of the disc is higher than the right side. This results in right fade when the disc is released.

Hyzer - The disc is tilted so that the left side of the disc is lower than the right causing the disc's flight to turn left.

Helix - A very nice throw when pulled off. This type of throw results in an s-shaped or backwards s shaped pattern. Often used for getting around complex obstacles.

Backhand - A backhand throw is a standard throw where the player has the disc across their chest to their opposite shoulder and then releases the disc back to the other side of their body.

Forehand -A forehand throw is the exact opposite to a Backhand throw. The forehand throw is where the player starts out with the disc away from their body and then pulls back towards the body. Also known as sidearm or flick.

Hammer - The disc is released from a vertical angle. This causes the disc to fly very high and return to the ground upside-down. Also known as a Tomahawk, or an overhand throw.

Roller - Advancing the disc by causing it to roll along the ground.

Driver- A disc designed for long-distance, fast flight.

Approach Disc -A disc, usually with more of a dome than a driver, designed for medium speed, stable flights, for second drives and long putts. Also known as a midrange disc.

Putter- A disc designed for short-range stability, sometimes made from softer plastic than drivers so that it "sticks" in the chains

Basket- made with chains to aim the disc at and a basket to catch the disc. Once a disc is at rest in the basket or chains the hole is finished

Tones- an object which when hit by the disc makes a sound. Found on set courses.

Targets-anything that can be used to create a disc golf course such as signs, trees , garbage cans, light poles etc. A.k.a. guerilla golfing

Tee pad-starting point for each hole also known as tee box.

Markers - usually a mini disc or other object placed at the front of the disc where it has landed. You must throw from behind marker your next throw.

Taco - Term used for a warped disc which has hit a tree or other solid object at high velocity.

Disc bag- Used to carry an assortment of discs. Tasty beverages ,markers, score cards, extra clothing ,a towel for wet conditions and anything else you may need for a enjoyable round.

Mandatory or mando - A flight path which must be followed in order to complete a hole.

Window-small spaces between obstacles such as trees or bushes. Can be pleasing or tragic.

Worm Burner - A disc thrown lower to the ground resulting in a shorter throw.

Heard golfing- larger groups of golfers that tend to slowly move across the course like cattle grazing. They are also known as lemmings.

Tapper-an approach shot or drive that lands close enough to the basket or tone to tap or putt into the basket without releasing the disc.

Birdie numnum- anticipation of a mouthwatering birdie attempt. Ymir saying.

nicked-When a player has thrown out of bounds and a penalty throw has been assessed it is known as a nick. Saying came from Gord nykaforuk who after throwing four shots out of bounds was given the slang in his honor. Gophertown saying

Tufted-When a throw has been blocked or altered by tufts of grass. Gophertown saying

tillage- a mis-throw that digs up dirt

arborist- someone who continually prunes the trees and bushes

“ball or stick golfer”- one who plays the traditional game of golf.

“Lipper”-A putt that rolls or skips around the Lip of the basket Also known as the “Toilet Bowl”

“Ace”- The ultiamte goal on each tee-off. To complete the whole in one shot.

“Of the Forehead”- When the disc bounces of or has a direct hit on the top ring of the Basket.

“Of the Chin” When the Disc bounces of the bottom of the lower part of the basket.
